What it takes to make it as a modern female pop star

"At first glance, I didn't realize the most notable thing about the video, as I was totally distracted by McKee's very bright candy-colored hair: it's that she actually wrote every song she was performing. "Hold It Against Me." "Teenage Dream." "Dynamite." "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)." "Part Of Me." "C'Mon." "California Girls." "Wide Awake.""                                                - Jezebel

Bleacher Report - MLB: Marlins Relief Pitcher Gets a Little Too Excited in His Celebration and Eats It

Bleacher Report - MLB Bleacher Report - The open source sports network  Marlins Relief Pitcher Gets a Little Too Excited in His Celebration and Eats It Jul 31st 2013, 02:36, by Tristan Thornburgh

Miami Marlins relief pitcher Chad Qualls' showing on Tuesday exemplified the Marlins season perfectly: Even when things go well, they still seem to fail spectacularly.

Qualls allowed a triple at the beginning of the eighth inning against the Mets with the score tied 2-2. After he struck out the side to keep the score even, Qualls' fist went before his feet, and he did a full face plant. He tried to play it off as if he were attempting a fist-pump-somersault, but it's clear he didn't quite keep his footing.

Another angle of the tumble.

The most embarrassing part of this, however, is that this isn't the first time Qualls has done this. Here he is falling on a pickoff attempt while playing for the Phillies.

Some athletes just aren't as sure on their feet as others, apparently.

Hat tip to Larry Brown Sports for the GIFs.

“The English Girl” by Daniel Silva – A British Needle in a French Haystack

The English Girl by Daniel Silva – A British Needle in a French HaystackIn the last few years Daniel Silva has made a name for himself as the author of various exciting thrillers and mystery novels, many of them revolving around a recurring protagonist, Gabriel Allon, master Israeli intelligence officer and art restorer extraordinaire. After finishing a case where his ridiculously-useless (for intelligence work of course) talent turned out to actually have a purpose, Gabriel Allon finds himself entangled in a whole different kind of web in The English Girl. An important British woman has reportedly disappeared on the French island of Corsica, and things wouldn't be so bad if that woman didn't have information which could utterly destroy the career of a prime minister, and if she wasn't taken as a hostage. If there was a single way to describe this book, I would say that it’s a non-stop thriller ride set on one of the most artistically-conscious roads there are out there. Daniel Silva incorporates a fair amount of art as well as interesting facts in relation to it in his book. He describes some pieces of work in great detail, and even delves into touches on a few more or less abstract concepts. However, he doesn’t focus on that aspect of the story more than is necessary and spends most of the time developing the actual subject, and boy is he good at that.Contrary to most mystery novels these days, this one actually is unpredictable. In general, I can predict a fair amount of the twists and turns a book is trying to hide, but this time around I just found myself giving up on the predictions and reading through it without making it into some kind of personal contest. It shows that Daniel Silva took his time crafting the story; he is a master at leading his readers by the nose and putting them exactly where he wants them to be.Finally, I feel like I have to dedicate this little section of the review to the characters. Silva does a magnificent job at making his characters feel lifelike, three-dimensional, and actually human. They aren’t cookie-cutter characters with personalities copy-pasted from the book of clichés… rather, each and every one of them feels quite unique and important, especially Allon who, despite being one of the most impossibly-indomitable humans on the planet, feels like he could actually exist. All in all, The English Girl is one of the most surprising and enthralling mysteries I’ve had the pleasure of reading in a while, and I safely recommend it to any fans of the genre.Places, where you can buy The English Girl Visit The English Girl Amazon webpage Visit The English Girl Amazon (Canada) webpage Visit The English Girl Barnes & Noble webpage More of the Daniel Silva's book reviews:The Fallen Angel

Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage (Audiobook)

Debating whether or not to marry her boyfriend, the author embarks on a one-year study of marriage"s evolution, cultural variations, pitfalls, and pleasures. It"s earnest and heartfelt, but there"s no story. Gilbert"s encapsulations of her research cannot sustain the reader"s interest, and her forays into amateur anthropology in Southeast Asia are crude and uncharitable: she vacillates between tropes of the happy savage and crowing that the Hmong women she interviews will never know her level of education, health, and agency. But these considerable flaws belong to the material alone; Gilbert"s reading is unimpeachable. Her voice is low, warm, slightly hoarse; her attitude is confiding and self-deprecating, and her charm does much in making the book"s less palatable sections go down easily.Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage (Audiobook) Free Download

"Give that fan a contract!"

Brooklyn Dodger righty Rex Barney smiles towards the heavens from the front of his 1951 Bowman. This is one of my favorite vintage cards. It's damn near perfect. Great portrait set against a blue sky with the stadium lights in the background. The whole thing tells me that this is a guy who enjoys being a major leaguer in 1951.Rex pitched six seasons for the Brooklyn Dodgers, just five full ones. He broke through for 15 wins in 1948 and pitched a no hitter against the Giants on September 9th of that year (there ya go Night Owl). His 3.10 ERA that year was by far the best of his career.Rex struggled with control throughout his career (1948 seems to be his baseball 'Harmonic Convergence') and was hampered by a leg injury which led to a shortened career. But while he was through with active baseball duty after 1952, he wasn't through with the game.He worked as a broadcaster and then in 1974 came to Baltimore as the public address announcer at Memorial Stadium and then at Camden Yards. He became well known for two expressions. "Give that fan a contract." was heard when a fan made a nice play on a ball hit into the stands, and his post-game 'Thank Youuuuuu' always meant that you were free to go fight your way out of the horrendously gridlocked Memorial Stadium parking lots. Rex worked for the O's until his death in 1997. By the time he passed he was an iconic figure in a town where he had never thrown a pitch. My scanner cut off the bottom border of this one and turned what is a slight printing hic-up into what looks like a crease across Barney's right cheek. The corners and colors are almost as they were when they came out of the wrapper. Only a couple of stains and a chip on the reverse spoil it.

Live Music 2013... Uh I think it's live... Hold up wait a minute...

WDYT?: Live music these days seems to incorporate a lot of pre-recorded material. A bunch of background singers lip-synching pre-recorded harmonies, musicians playing with a track (I'm not just talking click tracks but full band tracks). Pre-recorded lead vocals to support the lead vocalist's sound. I understand the need and/or preference for these things (i think) but how much of this takes away from the actual live music experience? I feel that part of the beauty of the live music experience are the imperfections. Are we so worried about these imperfections that we are willing to potentially sacrifice the "soul" of live instrumentation? Or should I just ignore the fact that every singer on stage sounds perfectly like the lead artist, with perfect reverb-heavy blend, and there aren't nearly enough instruments to produce the sounds and parts I'm hearing in the instrumentation? As an artist, where do I draw the line between authenticity and an industry standard performance? "Yo brotha, how'd you get your keyboard to sound like a horn line, police siren, orchestra and piano riff?" IDK <shrug> just talkin'
