First Airbus Military A400M for Turkish Air Force Makes Maiden Flight

The first production Airbus Military A400M new generation airlifter for the Turkish Air Force (TAF) has made its maiden flight, marking a key milestone towards its delivery on Monday. The aircraft, known as MSN9, took off from Seville, Spain, at 13:56 local time (GMT+2) on 9 August and landed back in Seville 5 hours and 30 minutes later. The A400M programme for the TAF is also making good progress at the Airbus Military International Training Centre at Seville, where TAF pilots, loadmasters, and maintenance technicians have already begun their training. Turkey has ordered 10 A400Ms.

Canadian Pacific to appeal Quebec bid for disaster clean-up cash

A documentary film aims to chronicle the hunt for all 700 of the original NES games.

The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) turned 30 Monday, an anniversary of one of the most iconic and beloved video game consoles ever. One group of NES enthusiasts is embarking on a 30-day challenge to find all 700 NES games ever published, and document that hunt on film.

The movie is "The NES Club," a documentary written and directed by filmmaker Rob McCallum who successfully completed a Kickstarter campaign recently, raising more than $16,000 to make the film.

The premise of "The NES Club" sounds sort of like a combination of "The Great Race" and a tchotchke-themed reality TV show like "Pawn Stars" ? movie protagonist and NES-diehard Jay Bartlett will embark on an international tour of major cities such as London and Toronto in search of the classic and arcane in the NES game library. In addition to the 30-day deadline, there are only a few main rules: Bartlett cannot purchase any of the games online, he has to use his own money to buy every game, and he must at least find every NES game that was officially recognized by Nintendo.

Like any project dedicated to a vintage video game system (McCallum cites the Web series "Game Chasers," which had a duo of gamers search around Texas for "classic games," as a major influence), "The NES Club" obviously carries with it a healthy dose of nostalgia. But McCallum told NBC News that part of his aim is to try to see what else beyond simple nostalgia still makes gamers so fond of the NES.

"I want to ask: what makes Mario so damn endearing?" McCallum said. "Is it just nostalgia, or is there something inherent in the mechanics of the game?"

McCallum referenced influential media theorist Marshall McLuhan to suggest that "the game we play reflect a lot about our society," adding that part of the reason that Nintendo secured such a powerful legacy with the NES was because the company took such a revolutionary and communal approach to screen-based gaming .

"The NES may have killed the classic arcade," McCallum said. "But it introduced the game console to the living room. The family became the new unit for how people played video games."

Today, McCallum said, that kind of gaming has become underappreciated once again thanks to the proliferation of distracting mobile devices and disembodied multiplayer games that are only played online.

"So there is an element of nostalgia to how we played the NES," McCallum said. "But people still want to connect with people! They miss the days where you're sharing a controller with another friend to get through 'Super Mario.' That shared experience, where we all huddled around one screen, rather than everybody focusing on their own screen, no longer exists."

McCallum said that while companies like Sony and Nintendo have begun to put more and more of their older video games up on newer hardware through programs like the Wii U's "virtual console," it was important for him to try to find physical copies of the NES games for their historical and artistic value.

"In a digital world, everything is erasable," he said. "So how long is everything going to last?"

With just 30 days, finding all 700 NES games might seem like a long shot. But the team apparently has one particularly elusive title in its sights: the 1987 Bandai game "Family Fun Fitness: Stadium Events." With just 2,500 units produced in the game's short history before it was acquired and rebranded by Nintendo, McCallum said that he's seen copies sell on eBay for as much as $75,000.

"It's a little pricey," he laughed.

Ansel Elgort Talks on Working Again with Shailene Woodley for TFiOS

In a recent interview with Vulture, Ansel Elgort responds to "incest" controversy with Shailene Woodley. In case you don't know, Ansel is working with Shailene in the movie adaptation of Divergent, wherein they play brothers and sisters Caleb and Tris. These two can be seen next as lovers in The Fault in Our Stars. Here's an excerpt from Vulture's interview: “I think that’s the magic of being an actor,” he said. “You can do that and it’s not weird — people play different roles all the time, you know?” Vulture: But people don’t usually go from brother to lover in quick succession, we pointed out. “No, not always,” Elgort admitted. “‪I feel like Shailene is the best actress I’ve ever met, who was good enough to read with, and I feel like I’m a pretty good actor, too, so I think it’s going to be no problem for us. It’ll be great.‬” Vulture: So really, no squeamishness at all about this?“‪Acting is acting. We have chemistry as brother and sister, but we’re both good enough to have chemistry as lovers as well.‬”

2 new channels for DStv viewers for June and July

Dstv is launching 2 new channels for its subscribers. On Wednesday, 19 June, True Movies 1 will join the current selection of movie channels on the DStv platform. True Movies 1 will be available to DStv Premium customers on channel 138. FOX International Channels recently announced a new entrant - FOX Crime. The channel is set to bring local viewers a blend of eagerly anticipated global content mixed with existing audience favourites and coupled with a dash of classic nostalgia programmes. FOX Crime is an entertainment channel entirely dedicated to crime and investigation. It delivers stories with good guys, bad guys, with one prevailing over the other. The channel premieres on the 9 July 2013 on DStv channel 126 at 19:00 CAT. It will be available to DStv Premium customers. True Movies 1 is a unique film channel which features moving and emotional true movies with performances from A-list stars such as Meryl Steep, Angelina Jolie and Helena Bonham Carter. FOX Crime programming includes The Bridge, the Law & Order franchise, Criminal Minds, Blue Bloods and boasts a Classic Crime block that launches with Magnum, CHIPS and Streets of San Francisco. The channel also showcases strong factual crime programming with international best practice shows such as 48 Hours, the Law & Order factual companion Arrest and Trial and introduces an African focused slot entitled Case Files Africa, covering infamous crime stories from across the continent. Audiences can look out for the exciting and highly touted show; The Bridge a global FIC premiere starring Damian Bichir and Diane Kruger. The much buzzed about show will air in South Africa on the channel 48 hours after US broadcast.

Prayers for Misheck

One of our sweet boys, Misheck, has been in the hospital since yesterday with an infection (caused severe swelling in his leg). He is getting iv antibiotics and is about 30 minutes from us. His housemother, Mama Joyce, is staying with him. Though we are very pleased with the care he is getting, African hospitals are still a little different from hospitals in the USA! He is in the "male ward", with about 16 other boys/men in beds around him. Nurses make their rounds, but his doctor saw him yesterday and won't make rounds again until Thursday. A caregiver stays with him and prepares food for him. She has a small chair beside his bed where she sleeps, but she is not allowed to bring her own blanket or pillow again! Joyce called today and said "Please bring me some pants to wear under my skirt - it is so cold!" We miss Misheck so much, and he wants to come home! He told Mama Joyce, "I am never coming to this place again!" When I asked him what he wanted us to tell the kids back at New Day, he said "that I love them." Please pray with us that his infection would clear up quickly and he would be able to return home to us!
