The 2013 Santa Anita Handicap features first-ever match up of past Big ‘Cap winners.It’s hard to believe that GAME ON DUDEand RON THE GREEK are the first two prior winners of the G.I Santa Anita Handicap to race against each other in the history of the race. The race, once known as the “Hundred-Grander” because of the gaudy purse for Great Depression era America, is regaining national prominence as the definitive winter G.I race for 4y.o.’s and up on the main track as the country claws out of a severe economic recession in 2013. Triple Crown winner AFFIRMED, “the best horse to look through a bridle” SPECTACULAR BID, and venerable gelding JOHN HENRY are nationally known winners of the Big ‘Cap. However, 1940 victor SEABISCUIT is probably the best known of them all. The Charles Howard-owned gelding, trained by Tom Smith, is romantically remembered as a beacon of hope in what was a downtrodden society. SEABISCUIT overcame an oppressive early career to win a match race against WAR ADMIRAL, finish second twice in the Big ‘Cap during the Great Depression, and won the “Hundred-Grander” at age seven after a year off and recovering from what was believed to be a career-ending injury. Fast forward to 2013 and a pair of 6y.o.’s, a rare occurrence in G.I racing over the last few decades, are trying to win the race for the second time. Ironically, both are blue collar horses like SEABISCUIT was. People identify with them because they race year in and year out and have reached prominence from relative obscurity. GAME ON DUDE was purchased privately at three for the Derby trail and beyond, but wasn’t up to the task. He’s been gelded some time ago, has now won multiple G.I races earning over $3.2 million and will race as long as he’s sound. His story sounds sort of like a human going to work, climbing the ladder for many years, with an eye to retirement. RON THE GREEK is from the stallion FULL MANDATE, not a household name in the top echelon of thoroughbred competition, but RON is working himself up from the “bottom” of the equine hierarchy as well. Like ‘DUDE, ‘RON was on running down the Derby trail once-upon-a-time. He’s a better older horse than he was at three, aging gracefully like fine wine. While GAME ON DUDE and RON THE GREEK face eight other probable starters, they will rightfully dominate the wagering on past class. They have earned their positions and the respect from their fans will show up at the windows. SFAM: Podcast On MERS-CoV

Earlier this month Public Health England hosted a conference on the emerging MERS Coronavirus (see PHE coronavirus conference: 9 July 2013) bringing together experts both from the UK, and around the globe.

Today, SfAM (the Society for Applied Microbiology) posted a 13-minute podcast on their website with interviews conducted during this conference.

An update on MERS-CoV

A brand new respiratory virus is circulating in the Middle East and of 80 cases, 44 people have died. MERS-CoV, as it has become known, is a coronavirus with close relatives in bats. In this podcast, experts speaking at a recent Public Health England conference talk about what we know so far and the important questions still to answer.

We hear from John Watson, head of respiratory diseases at Public Health England; Brian McCloskey, director of global health at Public Health England; Monica Galiano, head of genomic sequencing at Public Health England's Virus Reference Department; and Ab Osterhaus, head of the Virology Department at the Erasmus Medical Centre in the Netherlands.

Keselowski on pole at New Hampshire

Slumping Brad Keselowski could use a top-5 finish this week Brad Keselowski, who has struggled for weeks and fallen outside the top 10 in points, may have started a comeback Friday by winning the pole for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The defending Sprint Cup champion has not won a race this season and has slumped to 13th in the Cup standings. He has just one top-10 finish in his last 10 races. But Keselowski paced the field during qualifying for the Camping World 301. His average speed of 135.922 around the 1-mile oval edged Jimmie Johnson (135.902) for the top spot as the top 10 drivers all broke the track record. Kurt Busch was third, followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, Kasey Kahne and Jeff Burton.Read More Here....Sporting News New Hampshire Starting Lineup

Ansel Elgort Talks on Working Again with Shailene Woodley for TFiOS

In a recent interview with Vulture, Ansel Elgort responds to "incest" controversy with Shailene Woodley. In case you don't know, Ansel is working with Shailene in the movie adaptation of Divergent, wherein they play brothers and sisters Caleb and Tris. These two can be seen next as lovers in The Fault in Our Stars. Here's an excerpt from Vulture's interview: “I think that’s the magic of being an actor,” he said. “You can do that and it’s not weird — people play different roles all the time, you know?” Vulture: But people don’t usually go from brother to lover in quick succession, we pointed out. “No, not always,” Elgort admitted. “‪I feel like Shailene is the best actress I’ve ever met, who was good enough to read with, and I feel like I’m a pretty good actor, too, so I think it’s going to be no problem for us. It’ll be great.‬” Vulture: So really, no squeamishness at all about this?“‪Acting is acting. We have chemistry as brother and sister, but we’re both good enough to have chemistry as lovers as well.‬”

Adultery law took effect on Sept. 1, 1907 new york, 1 next the law making adultery a misdemeanor goes into effect, and a person convicted of the offense is subject imprisonment for a year or to a fine not exceeding $500 or to both. In this State adultery is the only ground on which an absolute divorce may be granted: and it is necessary to prove not only adultery, but the complaining husband or wife must also satisfy the court that the offending husband and wife has committed adultery without the knowledge, consent, privity, connivance, or procurement of the complainant. In other words, there must be no collusion between husband and wife to obtain a divorce.The new statute declares the very ground for a divorce a criminal act. It is intended to put a stop to collusive divorces. The court calendar in New York and Kings Counties is overcrowded with uncontested divorce cases; many of them are instituted where either the husband or the wife has furnished the other with the necessary evidence of adultery and an agreement has been made between the parties that the alleged offender should not contest the charge. In these cases the court, on detecting such collusion, could merely refuse a divorce; at present the court may direct a criminal proceeding to be instituted against the alleged offender.The divorce cases in this State may be divided into three classes. Firstly, we find those cases which are contested. These are comparatively few. Take the instance of a husband seeking a divorce from his wife on the ground of her adultery. She denies the charge and defends the action. Under the new statute the husband may also set into motion the machinery of a criminal court against her. Such proceedings may even be oppressive. The Police Court Magistrate, having information before him, must issue a warrant and hold the person charged for trial. Thus, a criminal proceeding may be conducted simultaneously with the civil suit for a divorce; it may also be instituted before or after the divorce action. A judgment in the divorce case in favor of the complainant is no proof of the crime in the criminal court; and, under the rules giving the defendant the benefit of a reasonable doubt, it may not be possible to obtain a conviction although a civil court may find the defendant guilty of adultery.Again, a vindictive wife will not free her husband of the marital relations though she can readily do so on the ground of his adultery; but she will seek to have her husband convicted of the crime. These are instances were the new statute may be made subservient to private personal ends. The second class of cases arises where there is no collusion between the parties; one is living in adulterous intercourse or has committed an act of adultery.In such a case a divorce should be obtained by the innocent party. Take the instance where the husband and wife do not and cannot live together; the home is broken up, there is no chance for a reunion; it is better for them, and their children, if there are any, that the bonds of matrimony should be dissolved. Yet, in such a case a divorce will be very difficult and sometimes impossible. The adulterer will fret criminal prosecution. He may be held upon the initiative of the court or of any person having a private grievance against him.He will leave the jurisdiction of the court, will avoid process thereof, and will make every possible obstacle to the divorce action, which in the absence of the new statute, he would not contest. It is true that the State is the guardian of the home and should preserve its sanctity. Our State is the most difficult for divorces. It has established the hardest ground for divorce. There is, then, no reason for a statute that makes it difficult or impossible to get a divorce where there exists the legal ground therefore.
