SPY August 8, 2013

SPY August 8 2013For those who watch the market closely, Thursday August 8, 2013 was the same story we've been seeing recently. Market moved lower off the open, found support above recent lows, and then spent the rest of the day grinding higher. The close was toward the top of the day's range, but the morning highs at the open were never bettered. Yesterday's lows held, which was the most important outcome. Both Bulls and Bears are frustrated by days like this. The market appears to be attracted to the value area of about 1690 on the futures, give or take a few points each day. When this has happened before during this rally, lulling everyone to sleep, it invariably has resolved to the upside with some weird, out-of-the-blue take-off. So far, obviously, we haven't seen that. The failure to recover 1700 on the futures is interesting but not a worry at this point for Bulls. The below chart of the futures shows that the market is forming another rising wedge. Last time, as you can see, that resolved to the upside. What you look for as a resolution is one of those out of nowhere parabolic take-offs. You certainly don't want to ride one of those short if you can help it.S&P 500 Emini Futures August 8, 2013 So far, if you are trading, the proper play has been to buy the dips and sell the rips. That seems like a reasonable strategy to continue until it stops working. Still Bullish, but that doesn't mean we won't continue seeing these little corrections that can be a bit scary if you are on the wrong side of the trade.A Curiosity From the PastSaw an interesting chart that somebody posted in a Youtube video in November, 2010. It's kind of eerie how this guys - whoever he is - plotted everything out back then. You know the old saying - a stopped clock is right twice a day - but this guy was spot on about what has happened to date. I don't know who he is, but kudos to him. Credit where credit is due, dude. Incidentally, his plot suggests the top of this drive higher is going to be around 1820 in "late spring 2014" - which, actually, sounds quite possible and almost, dare I say it, probable. You may view the video here.

GAME ON, RON - The 2013 Santa Anita Handicap features first-ever match up of past Big ‘Cap winners.

The 2013 Santa Anita Handicap features first-ever match up of past Big ‘Cap winners. It’s hard to believe that GAME ON DUDEand RON THE GREEK are the first two prior winners of the G.I Santa Anita Handicap to race against each other in the history of the race.  The race, once known as the “Hundred-Grander” because of the gaudy purse for Great Depression era America, is regaining national prominence as the definitive winter G.I race for 4y.o.’s and up on the main track as the country claws out of a severe economic recession in 2013. Triple Crown winner AFFIRMED, “the best horse to look through a bridle” SPECTACULAR BID, and venerable gelding JOHN HENRY are nationally known winners of the Big ‘Cap.  However, 1940 victor SEABISCUIT is probably the best known of them all.  The Charles Howard-owned gelding, trained by Tom Smith, is romantically remembered as a beacon of hope in what was a downtrodden society.  SEABISCUIT overcame an oppressive early career to win a match race against WAR ADMIRAL, finish second twice in the Big ‘Cap during the Great Depression, and won the “Hundred-Grander” at age seven after a year off and recovering from what was believed to be a career-ending injury. Fast forward to 2013 and a pair of 6y.o.’s, a rare occurrence in G.I racing over the last few decades, are trying to win the race for the second time.  Ironically, both are blue collar horses like SEABISCUIT was.  People identify with them because they race year in and year out and have reached prominence from relative obscurity.  GAME ON DUDE was purchased privately at three for the Derby trail and beyond, but wasn’t up to the task.  He’s been gelded some time ago, has now won multiple G.I races earning over $3.2 million and will race as long as he’s sound.  His story sounds sort of like a human going to work, climbing the ladder for many years, with an eye to retirement.  RON THE GREEK is from the stallion FULL MANDATE, not a household name in the top echelon of thoroughbred competition, but RON is working himself up from the “bottom” of the equine hierarchy as well.  Like ‘DUDE, ‘RON was on running down the Derby trail once-upon-a-time.  He’s a better older horse than he was at three, aging gracefully like fine wine. While GAME ON DUDE and RON THE GREEK face eight other probable starters, they will rightfully dominate the wagering on past class.  They have earned their positions and the respect from their fans will show up at the windows.  Here’s the run down. **THE ARTICLE CAN BE READ IN IT'S ENTIRETY AT THOROFAN'S HANDICAPPER'S CORNER**Enjoy!  Leave me a message here or shoot me one on twitter...I'm not as connected as most (and am dealing with family issues), but I'd love to share comment with you about this great game!!!

June Super Moon 22-23, 2013

Full moon falls on June 23, 2013 at 11:32 UTC (6:32 a.m. CDT in the U.S.). Thus, for many, the moon appears about equally full in the June 22 sky as it does on June 23. This full moon is not only the closest and largest full moon of the year. It also presents the moon’s closest encounter with Earth for all of 2013. The moon will not be so close again until August, 2014. At United States’ time zones, that means the moon will turn full on June 23 at 7:32 a.m. EDT, 6:32 a.m. CDT, 5:32 a.m. MDT and 4:32 a.m. PDT. We astronomers call this sort of close full moon a perigee full moon. The word perigee describes the moon’s closest point to Earth for a given month. Two years ago, when the closest and largest full moon fell on March 19, 2011, many used a term we’d never heard before: supermoon. Last year, we heard this term again to describe the year’s closest full moon on May 6, 2012. Now the term supermoon is being used a lot. Last month’s full moon – May 24-25, 2013 – was also a supermoon. But the June full moon is even more super! In other words, the time of full moon falls even closer to the time of perigee, the moon’s closest point to Earth. The crest of the moon’s full phase in June 2013, and perigee, fall within an hour of each other.  What does supermoon mean exactly? And how special is the June 23, 2013 supermoon?Your full answer and story follows on this link here

AFC East / NFC East / AFC North / NFC North / AFC South / NFC South / AFC West / NFC West

Arizona Cardinals

Ronda 1, pick 7

Ronda 2, pick 6 (38)

Ronda 3, pick 7 (69)

Ronda 4, pick 6 (103)

Ronda 5, pick 7 (140)

Ronda 6, pick 6 (174)

Ronda 7, pick (219) (de Carolina por Oakland)

Principales necesidades

Offensive Lineman, Defensive Lineman, Quarterback.

San Francisco 49ers

Ronda 1, pick 31

Ronda 2, pick 2 (34) (de los Chiefs)

Ronda 2, pick 29 (61)

Ronda 3, pick 12 (74) (de los Panthers)

Ronda 3, pick 31 (93)

Ronda 4, pick 31 (128)

Ronda 4, pick 34 (131) (complementaria)

Ronda 5, pick 24 (157) (de los Colts)

Ronda 6, pick 5 (173) (de los Eagles)

Ronda 6, pick 12 (180) (de los Dolphins)

Ronda 7, pick 31 (237)

Ronda 7, pick 40 (246) (complementaria)

Ronda 7, pick 46 (252) (complementaria)

Principales necesidades:

Safety, Cornerback, defensive end, tight end

Seattle Seahawks

Ronda 2, pick 24 (56)

Ronda 3, pick 25 (87)

Ronda 4, pick 26 (123)

Ronda 5, pick 5 (138) (de los Raiders)

Ronda 5, pick 25 (158)

Ronda 6, pick 26 (194)

Ronda 7, pick 14 (220) (de los Saints)

Ronda 7, pick 25 (231)

Ronda 7, pick 35 (241) (complementaria)

Ronda 7, pick 36 (242) (complementaria)

Principales necesidades:

Linebacker, tackle derecho, guard, QB, suplente, tight end

St Louis Rams

Ronda 1, pick 16

Ronda 1, pick 22 (de los Redskins)

Ronda 2, pick 14 (46)

Ronda 3, pick 16 (78)

Ronda 4, pick 16 (113)

Ronda 5, pick 16 (149)

Ronda 6, pick 16 (184)

Ronda 7, pick 16 (222)

Principales necesidades

Wide Receiver, Runningback, Safety, Offensive Linemen, Linebacker.

Today on "Kresta in the Afternoon" - April 15, 2013

Talking about the "things that matter most" on Apr. 15
4:00 Pope Francis Chooses 8 Cardinal To Advise on Curial Reform In a signal that major reform may be on the horizon, the Vatican announced Saturday that Pope Francis has formed a group of eight cardinals from around the world to "advise him on the government of the universal church" and "to study a project of revision" of a document from John Paul II on the Roman Curia. At first blush, all these cardinals seem like strong personalities. Several have voiced criticisms over the years about various aspects of Vatican operations, while two, Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston and Cardinal Reinhard Marx of Munich, have played key roles in the church's response to the child sexual abuse crisis. We talk to long-time Vatican analyst John Allenabout the possible reforms and his recent trip to Argentina to talk with those who know St. Francis best.
Years ago Frank Beckwith coined the phrase passive aggressive tyranny trick in order to point to a phenomenon that occurs in the public square, though most frequently on college campuses. The trick is this: those who claim to be open and tolerant to differing points of view seem hell bent on using the levers of power to exclude any contrary perspectives within their communities. We have a number of recent examples and Frank is here to discuss them.
4:40 Detroit Free Press Columnist / Editorial Rail on Church and Archbishop Vigneron / Canon Lawyer Ed Peters
5:00 AP Report: Pope Francis Supports Crackdown on US Nuns
Here is how the first paragraph of the AP report goes: The Vatican said Monday that Pope Francis supports the Holy See's crackdown on the largest umbrella group of U.S. nuns, dimming hopes that a Jesuit pope whose emphasis on the poor mirrored the nuns' own social outreach would take a different approach than his predecessor. Ann Carey, author of Sisters in Crisis: The Tragic Unveiling of Womens Religious Communities.
5:20 42 The Jackie Robinson Story
In 1946, Branch Rickey put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson to the team, breaking Major League Baseball's infamous color line. But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and even other players. Facing unabashed racism from every side, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickey's hopes. Instead, Number 42 let his talent on the field do the talking -- ultimately winning over fans and his teammates, silencing his critics, and paving the way for others to follow. The movie is 42 and we talk to the writer and director Brian Helgelandore Show less

5:40 Liverpool Care Pathway: The Road to Backdoor Euthanasia
Several years ago, bureaucrats at the United Kingdoms National Health Servicea socialized system in which hospitals are funded and operated by the statereacted to legitimate and widespread complaints from family members that their loved ones were dying in agony in NHS hospitals. In response, well-meaning pain-control experts created a protocolknown as the Liverpool Care Pathwaywhich, among other provisions, informed doctors when to apply a legitimate medical palliative intervention known as palliative sedation. Indeed, as so often happens in centralized systems, the bureaucratic remedy for one problem led to even worse trouble down the line. We talk to Wesley Smithabout the road to backdoor euthanasia.
