Favorite Films, Favorite Directors: Day of The Outlaw by Andre De Toth

Burl Ives and Robert Ryan in Day of the OutlawEd here: Day of The Outlaw is one of the most powerful and unique westerns I've ever seen. The relationship  between Robert Ryan and Burl Ives puts this in my top ten westerns.  The dancing scene here is one of the most chilling and remarkable sequences ever put to film. The final half hour is worthy of John Ford at his best as a FILM director. Psychologically Ford couldn't have pulled it off. Director Andrew De Toth directed many of my favorite B crime and western pictures.  He wrote many major films but always preferred to direct lower-budget because he said big stars defined the film rather than the writing and acting. Jack Warner said he would triple De Toth's budget if he'd put John Wayne in the picture. But De Toth  told him he thought Wayne was "big and stupid." In a rage Warner cut the budget on the film even more and told him he had fifteen days to shoot it. De Toth brought it in in fourteen under budget. It's one of my favorite B crime films "Crime Wave." He was right. Sterling Hayden did a much better job than Wayne would have. De Toth later explained that he liked protagonists who were conflicted, remorseful sometimes, and agitated. So do I. Think of Anthony Mann's protagonists, especially James Stewart. Here from the U.K.'s Telegraph is reviewer Tim Robey's excellent take on the picture.Tim Robey recommends... Day of the Outlaw (1959)In his weekly column, Tim Robey recommends a film that is indisputably worth two hours of your time. This week: Day of the Outlaw, a mesmerising Western that continually redefines what heroism might mean.Every great Western is a unique statement on them all. Consider how many of the best examples are about how the West was lost, not won – and how they like to blur the binary sort of morality we might associate with gunfights at dawn. André de Toth's mesmerising Day of the Outlaw keeps redefining everything it's saying: what heroism might mean, what an outlaw is, how best to deal with one. If your routine matinée Western offers the sure ground of favourite stars trading banter on the same old backlots, this is more like clambering up a rocky outcrop which could tumble at any moment. It was filmed in wintry Oregon, doubling as a tiny Wyoming town with the entirely apt name of Bitters. Russell Harlan was the cinematographer, but it could hardly look less like Howard Hawks's glowing, sunset-hued Rio Bravo, which he shot the same year. Harlan's use of monochrome here is pitiless, frigid, unconsoling. The mountains enclose every exterior shot, and snow is everywhere. Matching the movie's grim visage with a rugged one of his own, Robert Ryan gives a central performance that's ruthlessly tough. As the story begins, he's riding in to air a grievance about barbed–wire fences, and we immediately quail for whoever's on the receiving end. What really stands between Ryan's Blaise Starrett and local farmer Hal (Alan Marshal) isn't the fence. It's Helen (Tina Louise), the lover Starrett missed his chance to marry years before. The movie's first 20 minutes culminate in deadlock, a stand–off, and a bottle being rolled along the bar: when it falls, they'll draw. It doesn't fall. The movie chooses this inspired moment to introduce its real threat: seven army deserters, led by dying captain Jack Bruhn (Burl Ives), who barge in and hold the whole town to ransom.Ryan, hitherto suspected to be the villain of the piece, is suddenly placed in the strange position of being its hero: the only man able to stand up to this brutal incursion of desperate, sex-starved men. All except Bruhn are immediately eyeing up the town's women, and before long de Toth is staging a tense bar-room dance sequence, like some ceilidh from hell. To incongruously jaunty honky-tonk piano, Bruhn's men swing their captive partners around the room like rag-dolls.for the rest go here:http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/recommendations/10047540/Tim-Robey-recommends...-Day-of-the-Outlaw-1959.html

OUT OF THE BOX: Converted Dumpster is Home Sweet Home

A Brooklyn man's converted dumpster takes dumpster-diving to brand new heights, serving as his no frills crashpad and home-away-from-home for whenever he comes to New York City.New York's apartment rents and hotel rates are utterly astronomical, as everyone who's ever lived or visited there already knows, and unfortunately these continue creeping ever skyward, pricing most of humanity out of the market.converted dumpster homeSo to offset the high cost of travel and accommodations, designer Greg Kloehn, a frequent guest in the Big Apple, came up with enough cash for an economical solution that is nothing short of artistic. He bought an old garbage dumpster and -- no rubbish -- converted it into a mini estate. For those interested in following suit, $2000 was the total ticket-price for the stinky container. Not counting all the necessary renovations which cover everything one would need to subsist, including a kitchen sink and working toilet. In fact, Kloehn's electrified converted dumpster, although somewhat cramped inside, even sports a wet bar, kitchen nook, lounge deck with umbrella, and a set of wheels should he ever have to relocate. No doubt about it, Americonic Art, proud maker for over two decades of the gorgeous White Trash Collection of repurposed garbage, is pretty envious of this rugged dude's ingenuity. Despite that his little home is ... well ... kind of homely in appearance.

GAME ON, RON - The 2013 Santa Anita Handicap features first-ever match up of past Big ‘Cap winners.

The 2013 Santa Anita Handicap features first-ever match up of past Big ‘Cap winners. It’s hard to believe that GAME ON DUDEand RON THE GREEK are the first two prior winners of the G.I Santa Anita Handicap to race against each other in the history of the race.  The race, once known as the “Hundred-Grander” because of the gaudy purse for Great Depression era America, is regaining national prominence as the definitive winter G.I race for 4y.o.’s and up on the main track as the country claws out of a severe economic recession in 2013. Triple Crown winner AFFIRMED, “the best horse to look through a bridle” SPECTACULAR BID, and venerable gelding JOHN HENRY are nationally known winners of the Big ‘Cap.  However, 1940 victor SEABISCUIT is probably the best known of them all.  The Charles Howard-owned gelding, trained by Tom Smith, is romantically remembered as a beacon of hope in what was a downtrodden society.  SEABISCUIT overcame an oppressive early career to win a match race against WAR ADMIRAL, finish second twice in the Big ‘Cap during the Great Depression, and won the “Hundred-Grander” at age seven after a year off and recovering from what was believed to be a career-ending injury. Fast forward to 2013 and a pair of 6y.o.’s, a rare occurrence in G.I racing over the last few decades, are trying to win the race for the second time.  Ironically, both are blue collar horses like SEABISCUIT was.  People identify with them because they race year in and year out and have reached prominence from relative obscurity.  GAME ON DUDE was purchased privately at three for the Derby trail and beyond, but wasn’t up to the task.  He’s been gelded some time ago, has now won multiple G.I races earning over $3.2 million and will race as long as he’s sound.  His story sounds sort of like a human going to work, climbing the ladder for many years, with an eye to retirement.  RON THE GREEK is from the stallion FULL MANDATE, not a household name in the top echelon of thoroughbred competition, but RON is working himself up from the “bottom” of the equine hierarchy as well.  Like ‘DUDE, ‘RON was on running down the Derby trail once-upon-a-time.  He’s a better older horse than he was at three, aging gracefully like fine wine. While GAME ON DUDE and RON THE GREEK face eight other probable starters, they will rightfully dominate the wagering on past class.  They have earned their positions and the respect from their fans will show up at the windows.  Here’s the run down. **THE ARTICLE CAN BE READ IN IT'S ENTIRETY AT THOROFAN'S HANDICAPPER'S CORNER**Enjoy!  Leave me a message here or shoot me one on twitter...I'm not as connected as most (and am dealing with family issues), but I'd love to share comment with you about this great game!!!

Stars react to the acquittal of George Zimmerman

The acquittal of George Zimmerman debate last night in the United States. Many celebrities have shared their disappointment on Twitter.eorge Zimmerman was acquitted Saturday night murder of Trayvon Martin, a young black man killed in 2012 in Florida. The accused, whose father is white and mother Peruvian, denied any racial motivation for his actThe jury found that Zimmerman had acted in self-defense, a greens is far from unanimous in the United States. "This is the saddest news I've heard!, Singer Rihanna posted on Twitter, reaffirming its support to the family of Trayvon Martin. Shared by Gabrielle Union, who could not hide his disappointment at feeling the verdict.  "How do we explain this to our children? Apparently being black is an offense liable to the death penalty. # TrayvonMartin "she has written. "My heart is heavy ... for all those who knew and loved # TrayvonMartin, told Mandy Moore. His life was important. It's a shame. " Astonishment was also seized Miley Cyrus, who wanted to speak to his millions of followers. "I feel so bad # RipTrayvonMartin. There is no justice, no respect. This world has become worrisome. " Unofficial New Kids on the Block, Donnie Wahlberg, also expressed his incomprehension while Sean 'Diddy' Combs has preferred to take the height at the situation. "I leave it in the hands of God," he tweeted the announcement of the acquittal of George Zimmerman.

The Teleology of UFOs?

purpose.jpgTeleology is the belief that natural processes are purposefully directed toward some end or goal. Are UFOs natural processes? They seem to be; that is, there is a tendency, on the part of rational persons, to see UFOs as tangible (in a sense) and natural because they have been seen to maneuver as natural objects, even when they depart from what other objects can do: speed, turns, sudden disappearances, et cetera. But is there a goal or end in the UFO process? None that anyone has been able to discern.UFOs don’t operate on or use Newtonian principles.UFOs are more quantum-like: uncertain and bizarre. This disturbs those who like to understand that with which they are confronted, either in fact or metaphorically. One can cite all the UFO sightings extant but still have no idea what the end-game or purpose of UFOs may be.If one sees an aircraft of human design in flight, one can assume, rightfully, that the aircraft is determined to get from an identifiable point A to point B.A UFO, seen in flight, is just an object with no observable purpose. It’s not going from point A to point B. And it doesn’t really seem to be engaging in aerial displays to enchant or entertain. The airships of the 1890s operated, seemingly, with no definable purpose.Kenneth Arnold’s “saucers” came from nowhere and went nowhere. The Washington D.C, “blips” of 1952 came from nowhere and went nowhere also.Even UFOs or “flying saucers” that made it to point B (from some unknown point A) abruptly departed to an ethereal Point C, which has always remained hidden.Observation of UFOs, like quantum particles, remain elusive. Unlike the deterministic nature of normal flying objects (airplanes, for example), UFOs present the non-deterministic nature of quantum particles or waves. As coherence is a quantum problem, so too coherence is a problem when it comes to UFOs.Observations of UFOs merely exacerbates uncertainty. No one has, credibly, shown by observation that UFOs have a purpose, a teleology. This is the crux of the UFO enigma: the phenomenon has no basis in Newtonian reality and that makes for difficulty on the part of those intrigued by or studying the phenomenon. Are UFOs worthy of study? Are quantum particles/waves worthy of study?quantum7.jpgRR

How-To: 3D Print a Model of your Brain

woVYRRjhReddit user intirb recently posted a detailed tutorial on how to 3D print a model of your own brain using an MRI scan. If you haven’t had your head checked lately (I should hope you haven’t had to), intirb suggests inquiring in local university neuroscience departments to see if you can participate in a clinical trial in exchange for the MRI scans.Once you have the file of your grey and white matter cut into thin slices, you can import it into a program called FreeSurfer. It’s a highly specialized piece of software, and familiarity with Linux is recommended to use it, although there are plenty of online resources to help you out.T4WYXDohFreeSurfer will generally take 1-2 days for an average desktop computer to process the MRI data and convert it into an STL file. The resulting file is so complex that it needs to be brought into MeshLab for simplification. Most programs that handle STL files cannot work with objects having more than 20,000 faces. Meshlab is used to reduce the file to below that threshold.Once this process was complete, intirb had success with dumping the STL straight into his MakerBot. Using this method, you can have a model of your own brain after just two to three hours of printing.
