Favorite Films, Favorite Directors: Day of The Outlaw by Andre De Toth

Burl Ives and Robert Ryan in Day of the OutlawEd here: Day of The Outlaw is one of the most powerful and unique westerns I've ever seen. The relationship  between Robert Ryan and Burl Ives puts this in my top ten westerns.  The dancing scene here is one of the most chilling and remarkable sequences ever put to film. The final half hour is worthy of John Ford at his best as a FILM director. Psychologically Ford couldn't have pulled it off. Director Andrew De Toth directed many of my favorite B crime and western pictures.  He wrote many major films but always preferred to direct lower-budget because he said big stars defined the film rather than the writing and acting. Jack Warner said he would triple De Toth's budget if he'd put John Wayne in the picture. But De Toth  told him he thought Wayne was "big and stupid." In a rage Warner cut the budget on the film even more and told him he had fifteen days to shoot it. De Toth brought it in in fourteen under budget. It's one of my favorite B crime films "Crime Wave." He was right. Sterling Hayden did a much better job than Wayne would have. De Toth later explained that he liked protagonists who were conflicted, remorseful sometimes, and agitated. So do I. Think of Anthony Mann's protagonists, especially James Stewart. Here from the U.K.'s Telegraph is reviewer Tim Robey's excellent take on the picture.Tim Robey recommends... Day of the Outlaw (1959)In his weekly column, Tim Robey recommends a film that is indisputably worth two hours of your time. This week: Day of the Outlaw, a mesmerising Western that continually redefines what heroism might mean.Every great Western is a unique statement on them all. Consider how many of the best examples are about how the West was lost, not won – and how they like to blur the binary sort of morality we might associate with gunfights at dawn. André de Toth's mesmerising Day of the Outlaw keeps redefining everything it's saying: what heroism might mean, what an outlaw is, how best to deal with one. If your routine matinée Western offers the sure ground of favourite stars trading banter on the same old backlots, this is more like clambering up a rocky outcrop which could tumble at any moment. It was filmed in wintry Oregon, doubling as a tiny Wyoming town with the entirely apt name of Bitters. Russell Harlan was the cinematographer, but it could hardly look less like Howard Hawks's glowing, sunset-hued Rio Bravo, which he shot the same year. Harlan's use of monochrome here is pitiless, frigid, unconsoling. The mountains enclose every exterior shot, and snow is everywhere. Matching the movie's grim visage with a rugged one of his own, Robert Ryan gives a central performance that's ruthlessly tough. As the story begins, he's riding in to air a grievance about barbed–wire fences, and we immediately quail for whoever's on the receiving end. What really stands between Ryan's Blaise Starrett and local farmer Hal (Alan Marshal) isn't the fence. It's Helen (Tina Louise), the lover Starrett missed his chance to marry years before. The movie's first 20 minutes culminate in deadlock, a stand–off, and a bottle being rolled along the bar: when it falls, they'll draw. It doesn't fall. The movie chooses this inspired moment to introduce its real threat: seven army deserters, led by dying captain Jack Bruhn (Burl Ives), who barge in and hold the whole town to ransom.Ryan, hitherto suspected to be the villain of the piece, is suddenly placed in the strange position of being its hero: the only man able to stand up to this brutal incursion of desperate, sex-starved men. All except Bruhn are immediately eyeing up the town's women, and before long de Toth is staging a tense bar-room dance sequence, like some ceilidh from hell. To incongruously jaunty honky-tonk piano, Bruhn's men swing their captive partners around the room like rag-dolls.for the rest go here:http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/recommendations/10047540/Tim-Robey-recommends...-Day-of-the-Outlaw-1959.html

Oiling the War Machinery, From Oslo to Heathrow to Washington | Global Research

Oiling the War Machinery, From Oslo to Heathrow to Washington | Global Research bradlymanning In Oslo, the world’s most important peace prize has been hijacked for war. In London, government authority has just fired a new shot at freedom of the press. And in Washington, the Obama administration continues to escalate its attacks on whistleblowers, journalism and civil liberties. As a nation at peace becomes a fading memory, so does privacy. Commitments to idealism — seeking real alternatives to war and upholding democratic values — are under constant assault from the peaks of power.Normalizing endless war and shameless surveillance, Uncle Sam and Big Brother are no longer just close. They’re the same, with a vast global reach.Last week, I met with the Research Director of the Nobel Committee at its headquarters in Oslo. We sat at one end of a long polished conference table, next to boxes of petitions signed by 100,000 people urging that the Nobel Peace Prize go to Bradley Manning. The Nobel official, Asle Toje, remained polite but frosty when I urged — as I had two hours earlier at a news conference – that the Nobel Committee show independence from the U.S. government by awarding the Peace Prize to Manning. Four years after the prize went to President Obama, his leadership for perpetual war is incontrovertible — while Manning’s brave whistleblowing for peace is inspiring. In recent times, I pointed out, the Nobel Peace Prize has gone to some dissenters who were anathema to their governments’ leaders — but not to any recipient who profoundly displeased the U.S. government. Toje responded by mentioning Martin Luther King Jr., a rejoinder that struck me as odd; King received the prize 49 years ago, and more than two years passed after then until, in April 1967, he angered the White House with his first full-throated denunciation of the Vietnam War.I motioned to the stacks of the petition, which has included personal comments from tens of thousands of signers — reflecting deep distrust of the present-day Nobel Peace Prize, especially after Obama won it in 2009 while massively escalating the U.S. war effort in Afghanistan. We were in the grand and ornate building that has housed the Nobel Committee for more than a hundred years. Outside, a bust of Alfred Nobel graces the front entrance, and just across a small traffic circle is the U.S. Embassy, an imposing dark gray presence with several stories, hundreds of windows on each of its three sides and plenty of electronic gear on its roof. (That intersection is widely understood to be a base for American surveillance operations.) More than ever in recent years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee building’s physical proximity to the U.S. Embassy is an apt metaphor for its political alignment.Over the weekend, the British government showed more toxic aspects of its “special relationship” with the U.S. government. As the Guardian reported, “The partner of the Guardian journalist who has written a series of stories revealing mass surveillance programs by the U.S. National Security Agency was held for almost nine hours on Sunday by UK authorities as he passed through London’s Heathrow Airport on his way home to Rio de Janeiro.” David Miranda, who lives with Glenn Greenwald, “was held for nine hours, the maximum the law allows before officers must release or formally arrest the individual. … Miranda was released, but officials confiscated electronics equipment including his mobile phone, laptop, camera, memory sticks, DVDs and game consoles.”Assaulting press freedom is part of a comprehensive agenda that President Obama is now pursuing more flagrantly than ever. From seizing phone records of AP reporters to spying on a Fox News reporter to successfully fighting for a federal court decision to compel reporter James Risen to reveal his source for a New York Times story, Obama’s war on journalism is serving executive impunity — for surveillance that fundamentally violates the Fourth Amendment and for perpetual war that, by force of arms and force of example, pushes the world into further bloody chaos. The destructive effects of these policies are countless. And along the way, for the Nobel Committee, more than ever, war is peace. Across the globe, aligned with and/or intimidated by official Washington, many governments are enablers of an American warfare/surveillance multinational state. And in Washington, at the top of the government, when it comes to civil liberties and war and so much more, the moral compass has gone due south.Norman Solomon is co-founder of RootsAction.org and founding director of the Institute for Public Accuracy. His books include “War Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death.” Information on the documentary based on the book is at www.WarMadeEasyTheMovie.org.

OUT OF THE BOX: Converted Dumpster is Home Sweet Home

A Brooklyn man's converted dumpster takes dumpster-diving to brand new heights, serving as his no frills crashpad and home-away-from-home for whenever he comes to New York City.New York's apartment rents and hotel rates are utterly astronomical, as everyone who's ever lived or visited there already knows, and unfortunately these continue creeping ever skyward, pricing most of humanity out of the market.converted dumpster homeSo to offset the high cost of travel and accommodations, designer Greg Kloehn, a frequent guest in the Big Apple, came up with enough cash for an economical solution that is nothing short of artistic. He bought an old garbage dumpster and -- no rubbish -- converted it into a mini estate. For those interested in following suit, $2000 was the total ticket-price for the stinky container. Not counting all the necessary renovations which cover everything one would need to subsist, including a kitchen sink and working toilet. In fact, Kloehn's electrified converted dumpster, although somewhat cramped inside, even sports a wet bar, kitchen nook, lounge deck with umbrella, and a set of wheels should he ever have to relocate. No doubt about it, Americonic Art, proud maker for over two decades of the gorgeous White Trash Collection of repurposed garbage, is pretty envious of this rugged dude's ingenuity. Despite that his little home is ... well ... kind of homely in appearance.

Meeting at The Well

With Rob and Aimee Touchstoneat Three French Hens, Nolensville, TN(Click for larger picture)I love it when God weaves our lives together…Saturday morning, I ran over to Nolensville to mail some packages and then––seeing how I love poking around antique stores––I continued half a mile down the road to the quaint little row of antique shops where I've found a few treasures before.I hadn't been in Three French Hens for more than a minute or two when a friend I hadn't met yet approached me. And I'm so glad she did! Aimee Touchstone, you absolutely made my day, lady. I'm grateful for your kind words about my books and am so glad we connected.Aimee's family was with her too, so I had the pleasure of meeting them as well. As it turns out, their family is involved in a ministry that's important to Joe and me as well––providing clean drinking water to third world communities who don't have it.Aimee's husband Rob is the Co-founder, Pastoral and Mission Director for The Well Coffeehouse, a non-profit coffee house in the heart of Nashville (Green Hills area), and their purpose is to change the world, one cup of coffee at a time. Listen as Rob shares their vision and their love for people…With Aimee Touchstone at Three French Hens,Nolensville, TNDid you know…"...6,000 people die every single day because they have no water or from water-born illnesses.  There are solutions to this problem.  But they involve digging not only into the ground, but into our hearts and our pockets.  The Well has a passion to bring clean water to people and to save lives.  A well, or clean water system, can literally save thousands of lives.  And they can be built for anywhere between $1000-$12,000 per well.  We want to help build as many as possible in order to help save thousands of lives.  When you buy coffee at The Well you are helping to give clean water and to save lives." [Read their entire mission statement on their website]The Well Coffeehouse2035 Richard Jones RoadNashville, TN 37215The name The Well comes from John 4 and Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. I love Jesus' response to her when she questions why he's asking her for a drink… "Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life." (NIV)What a privilege to partner with an organization like The Well to provide not only clean drinking water, but living water as well. I'll be making a special trip to The Well very soon and––if you live in Nashville or when you're passing through––I hope you will too. They also have a full online store with coffee, a to-die-for mug, shirts, and much more.I love how God weaves our lives together. I thought I was going to Three French Hens on Saturday morning to unearth a treasure. And as it turns out, I did. Thanks, Aimee! Thanks, Rob! And blessings in your ministry. I'll be seeing you again soon. Are you involved with an organization that helps provide water to third world countries? If not, I'd encourage you to check into The Well. And if you're an antique shopper, I'd love to know what treasures you've unearthed recently. Blessings on your Tuesday!

Currency Markets: The Next Crisis Has Begun

We would like to share with you today very interesting observations from the currency markets by Toby Connor. Recent volatility in the currency market was exceptional, particularly, when you consider that equity market was moving almost always in one direction - Up. Equity market volatility is at the record low and it looks like the real action now is in the US Dollar camp. Gold will follow this development fuelled by physical shortage as well.  This concept of "Megaphone Top" in US Dollar is very interesting and we have seen its brutal Bearish resolution in 2008 in equity markets before.Rick Rule On Gold & Resources: "The Stage Is Set For An Absolutely Dramatic Recovery" TNR.v, MUX"To make this dramatic and pleasant for Survivors picture come true we need just one thing - Pros with the money coming into the market, without them it will always be only the wishful thinking. We can see them coming now."Kitco:Currency Markets: The Next Crisis Has BegunToday the dollar broke through 80.40. This is a major development as it signals that the current daily cycle topped in only 2 days, thus confirming that the intermediate cycle has also topped.I've been warning for months and months that this was coming. Anyone with a modicum of common sense knew that printing trillions of dollars was going to eventually have consequences. There is no escaping the inevitable; if you aggressively debase your currency eventually you are going to have a currency crisis. The first one has now begun.Over the next 3-4 months the dollar is going to test the lower trend line of the megaphone topping pattern and ultimately break through. When it does we are going to witness a spectacular collapse in the dollar, probably testing the 2011 bottom by the next intermediate cycle low due in November. This is going to cause all kinds of problems. We are already seeing the bond market breaking free of Fed manipulation. This will only get worse as bonds recognize the severity of the crisis ahead. Ironically the Fed is going to print harder and faster to try and tame the bond market. It will have the reverse effect. It will just accelerate the dollar collapse which, in turn, will intensify the selling in bonds. This has already pricked the echo bubble in housing. In the chart below we see the same megaphone topping pattern in play as in the dollar index.Smart money has known for months this was coming. I strongly suspect the manipulation in gold over the last 8 months was done to transfer physical metal from weak hands into strong hands in preparation for this event. Now it's time for gold to do its job of protecting wealth during a currency crisis. I told subscribers last night that we will see a war over the next several days and weeks as gold breaks free of the manipulation and gets busy discounting the coming currency crisis. The intervention is going to try hard to keep gold prices down, but ultimately gold is going to win and break free of the artificially low prices. Ultimately gold is going to protect wealth during an inflationary period of time, just as it always does. And ultimately all the manipulation will succeed in doing is to cause price to rise much further and faster than would have occurred if gold had been allowed to trade freely.Batten down the hatches - the next Fed created catastrophe has already begun.By Toby ConnorGoldScentswww.goldscents.blogspot.com"Enhanced by Zemanta

Among The Janeites

There's a new Jane Austen related book coming out tomorrow adding to the plethora of Austen related books to date. I don't usually get too excited about the release of such books but this particular one has a special connection for me because...I - AM - IN - IT!Just before Thanksgiving in 2011 former journalist writer Deborah Yaffe emailed me about a new book she was writing about the fans of Jane Austen and she wanted to interview me about "Jane Austen's appeal to her many Christian fans". After much prayer and talking it over with my family I decided to agree to a telephone interview. Although my heart was pounding loud with some nervous excitement when I answered my phone at the appointed time after a few minutes I was able to relax and just enjoy chatting to a fellow Janeite about how I met Jane Austen and why I loved her and her characters.Book Description: For anyone who has ever loved a Jane Austen novel, a warm and witty look at the passionate, thriving world of Austen fandomThey walk among us in their bonnets and Empire-waist gowns, clutching their souvenir tote bags and battered paperbacks: the Janeites, Jane Austen’s legion of devoted fans. Who are these obsessed admirers, whose passion has transformed Austen from classic novelist to pop-culture phenomenon? Deborah Yaffe, journalist and Janeite, sets out to answer this question, exploring the remarkable endurance of Austen’s stories, the unusual zeal that their author inspires, and the striking cross-section of lives she has touched. Along the way, Yaffe meets a Florida lawyer with a byzantine theory about hidden subtexts in the novels, a writer of Austen fan fiction who found her own Mr. Darcy while reimagining Pride and Prejudice, and a lit professor whose roller-derby nom de skate is Stone Cold Jane Austen. Yaffe goes where Janeites gather, joining a pilgrimage to historic sites in Britain, chatting online with fellow fans, and attending the annual ball of the Jane Austen Society of North America—in period costume. Part chronicle of a vibrant literary community, part memoir of a lifelong love, Among the Janeites is a funny, touching meditation on the nature of fandom. - quoted from Amazon.comThis Tuesday Among The Janeites: A Journey Through The World Of Jane Austen Fandom by Deborah Yaffe will be officially released! I am excited to get my copy tomorrow to read on my Kindle! Quite vainly the first thing I'll do will be to search through it for my own name and see what parts of the interview she included. And I have to admit that I've already searched "Laurie Michael" in the book preview on Amazon and it seems I'm mentioned briefly in three places (one of those is in the Introduction)! From the reviews I've read at Austenprose and AustenBlog the book sounds very interesting and seems to be a very sympatheric look at the various ways that our fandom of Jane Austen's works manifests itself. I'm very much looking forward to reading it soon! After I have a chance to read the book I plan to review it so keep an eye out in the next week or so for that post.Have you heard about Among The Janeites? Are you interested in reading it?

Watch The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie Movie with Full HD Format

A pair of pint-sized rock stars wrestle with the perils of stardom, icky girls, and too much soda pop in this mockumentary comedy. Nine-year-old Nat Wolff is the singer, guitarist and songwriter for a rock band known as the Silver Bullets, which features his six-year-old brother, Alex Wolff, on the drums. With the help of their equally youthful bandmates Joshua Kaye, Thomas Batuello, and David Levi, Nat and Alex have built the Silver Bullets into one of the most popular groups on Earth, thanks to the business acumen of their manager, Cooper Pillot, and despite the uncalled-for assistance of Nat and Alex's accordion-wielding father (Michael Wolff). But life at the top isn't always easy, and creative differences begin to drive a wedge into the group when Nat insists they record a love ballad dedicated to his nine-year-old girlfriend, Rosalina (Allie Dimeco), while his bandmates would prefer to cut Thomas' "Boys Rule, Girls Drool." As the squabbling continues and Alex becomes addicted to lemon-lime soda, the Silver Bullets break up, but will the pleas of their many fans encourage them to reunite? The Naked Brothers Band was written and directed by Polly Draper, who happens to be Nat and Alex's real-life mom; the Silver Bullets write and perform their own material, and Draper was inspired by her kids' pre-teen musical exploits. Julianne Moore, Uma Thurman, and Cyndi Lauper make cameo appearances as some of the group's better-known fans. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Release Date The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie Oct 23, 2005 Wide If You Like this movie you can streaming The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie movie without downloading HERE WatchActors For The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie Nat Wolff,Alex Wolff,Joshua Kaye,David Levi,Thomas Batuello,Cole Hawkins,Allie DiMeco,Michael Wolff,Jesse Draper,Jonathan Pillot,Uma Thurman,Julianne Moore,Arsenio Hall,Cyndi Lauper,Tony ShalhoubGenres The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie : Kids & Family,Musical & Performing Arts,ComedyVisitor Ranting & Critics For The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie User Ranting The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie
