Meeting at The Well

With Rob and Aimee Touchstoneat Three French Hens, Nolensville, TN(Click for larger picture)I love it when God weaves our lives together…Saturday morning, I ran over to Nolensville to mail some packages and then––seeing how I love poking around antique stores––I continued half a mile down the road to the quaint little row of antique shops where I've found a few treasures before.I hadn't been in Three French Hens for more than a minute or two when a friend I hadn't met yet approached me. And I'm so glad she did! Aimee Touchstone, you absolutely made my day, lady. I'm grateful for your kind words about my books and am so glad we connected.Aimee's family was with her too, so I had the pleasure of meeting them as well. As it turns out, their family is involved in a ministry that's important to Joe and me as well––providing clean drinking water to third world communities who don't have it.Aimee's husband Rob is the Co-founder, Pastoral and Mission Director for The Well Coffeehouse, a non-profit coffee house in the heart of Nashville (Green Hills area), and their purpose is to change the world, one cup of coffee at a time. Listen as Rob shares their vision and their love for people…With Aimee Touchstone at Three French Hens,Nolensville, TNDid you know…"...6,000 people die every single day because they have no water or from water-born illnesses.  There are solutions to this problem.  But they involve digging not only into the ground, but into our hearts and our pockets.  The Well has a passion to bring clean water to people and to save lives.  A well, or clean water system, can literally save thousands of lives.  And they can be built for anywhere between $1000-$12,000 per well.  We want to help build as many as possible in order to help save thousands of lives.  When you buy coffee at The Well you are helping to give clean water and to save lives." [Read their entire mission statement on their website]The Well Coffeehouse2035 Richard Jones RoadNashville, TN 37215The name The Well comes from John 4 and Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. I love Jesus' response to her when she questions why he's asking her for a drink… "Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life." (NIV)What a privilege to partner with an organization like The Well to provide not only clean drinking water, but living water as well. I'll be making a special trip to The Well very soon and––if you live in Nashville or when you're passing through––I hope you will too. They also have a full online store with coffee, a to-die-for mug, shirts, and much more.I love how God weaves our lives together. I thought I was going to Three French Hens on Saturday morning to unearth a treasure. And as it turns out, I did. Thanks, Aimee! Thanks, Rob! And blessings in your ministry. I'll be seeing you again soon. Are you involved with an organization that helps provide water to third world countries? If not, I'd encourage you to check into The Well. And if you're an antique shopper, I'd love to know what treasures you've unearthed recently. Blessings on your Tuesday!

Keselowski on pole at New Hampshire

Slumping Brad Keselowski could use a top-5 finish this week Brad Keselowski, who has struggled for weeks and fallen outside the top 10 in points, may have started a comeback Friday by winning the pole for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The defending Sprint Cup champion has not won a race this season and has slumped to 13th in the Cup standings. He has just one top-10 finish in his last 10 races. But Keselowski paced the field during qualifying for the Camping World 301. His average speed of 135.922 around the 1-mile oval edged Jimmie Johnson (135.902) for the top spot as the top 10 drivers all broke the track record. Kurt Busch was third, followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, Kasey Kahne and Jeff Burton.Read More Here....Sporting News New Hampshire Starting Lineup

CUMPTON EARNS SECOND START THURSDAY AT REDS

Right-hander Brandon Cumpton will remain in the Pirates' rotation and make his next start in the finale of a four-game series with the Reds in Cincinnati on Thursday.    That was a relatively easy call for manager Clint Hurdle and general manager Neal Huntington to make after Cumpton's impressive Major League debut on Saturday.   The 24-year-old righty blanked the Dodgers on two hits through four innings, protecting a 1-0 lead, until a few elevated pitches in the fifth and sixth erased his small margin for error. He allowed three runs overall in five-plus innings in the Pirates' eventual 5-3 loss in 11 innings.   Significantly, the call on Cumpton will afford another rehab start for Jeanmar Gomez, who had been the prime alternative for the Reds set. Recovering from right forearm inflammation, Gomez went three innings and threw 64 pitches in his first rehab start with Triple-A Indianapolis.   That will come on Tuesday, when Gomez will shoot for 5 innings and 75 pitches for Indianapolis.   STARTING PITCHING DEPTH PAYING OFF FOR PIRATES: Pirates manager Clint Hurdle began talking confidently about his team's pitching depth back in February, when he could scan the practice fields of Pirate City and see a full complement of starting pitchers with others (Gerrit Cole, Francisco Liriano and Charlie Morton most prominent among them) on the waiting list.   Hurdle sounded like an Army recruiter when he termed his rotation "Eleven Strong." So, guess what? Brandon Cumpton on Saturday became the 11th different starter used by the Bucs in the season's first 68 games.   Last season, the Pirates needed only 10 different starters. Not sure whether that statistic is the better indication of the current depth -- or the fact the 2013 eleven includes only five who were also in the '12 mix (A.J. Burnett, Wandy Rodriguez, Jeff Locke, James McDonald, Morton)?   Next? If needed, it could be Stolmy Pimentel. The 23-year-old Dominican righty, acquired as part of the Boston package for Joel Hanrahan, has just been promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis after 13 solid starts at Altoona (4-3, 3.61).   FIRST NUMBER/LAST WORD: 3.21: Collective ERA of Pirates pitchers when throwing to Russell Martin, second-lowest among Major League catchers, trailing only St. Louis' Yadier Molina (3.16).   WORTH NOTING: Catcher Russell Martin was a late scratch from Sunday's lineup after he complained of lower body soreness following a light on-field workout. Martin had caught eight of the previous nine games.   Pirates manager Clint Hurdle is comfortable with the playing load carried by Martin, who has appeared in 53 of the first 68 games, including some action in right field and at third base.   Brandon Cumpton became the first National League pitcher to start his career with four straight strikeouts since 1962, when the Dodgers' Pete Richert fanned the first six Reds batters he faced in his April 12 debut.   Wandy Rodriguez (elbow inflammation) threw 15 fastballs problem-free in his Saturday bullpen session and will throw another bullpen Monday in Cincinnati.

Uh Oh: Massive Sunspot Spewing at Earth

X1.2 class solar flare on May 14, 2013
X1.2 class solar flare on May 14, 2013 - NASA/SDO

May 17, 2013 - Okay, this might be bad. There's a big, very active sunspot called "Region AR1748" that's been spitting some very big solar flares over the past week. "A huge explosion on the sun will deal Earth a glancing blow today (May 17)," says Space.com. (See video below.)

"The sun storm erupted late Tuesday during a powerful solar flare -- the fourth unleashed by a single sunspot in just 48 hours -- and hurled a massive cloud of charged particles out into space at millions of miles an hour."

AR1748 produced four X-class flares within 48 hours

Busy, very busy. Region AR1748 produced the first four X-class solar flares of 2013 in less than 48 hours. That's no small feat (see image, left).

The big blob of particles and stuff is called a coronal mass ejection (CME), and it's really a lot -- a lot -- of stuff.

In fact, it was "billions of tons of solar particles" worth of stuff, reports UPI. And it's traveling at extreme speeds. "The CME which erupted at 5:24 a.m EDT left the sun at speeds of around 745 miles per second, and could cause a space weather phenomenon called a geomagnetic storm when it connects with the outside of the Earth's magnetic envelope known as the magnetosphere."

But should we be afraid? Space.com says that "this one isn't aimed directly at us," says Space.com, "so there's no cause for alarm, experts say." Whew. That's better, but.... what about next time?

Blaine Gabbert, Chad Henne split snaps at Jaguars OTAs

The Jacksonville Jaguars have emphasized competition at all positions throughout the offseason. The new coaching staff has backed that up with its early deployment of snaps in organized team activities.

Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne, perhaps the worst QB position group in the NFL, are rotating with the first team evenly.

Breer: It's a new day in Jacksonville After his debut draft with the Jaguars, GM David Caldwell reveals the new regime's unique approach to Albert Breer. More ...

"It's going good," coach Gus Bradley said of the competition. "We're rotating by period. There's a lot of competition, and they're battling it. Everything we do, we're trying to create some sort of competition for our team. Hopefully as OTAs go on, we get more and more of those situations to evaluate them. I think once we get pads on and see how they react in different situations, it will become more clear."

The Associated Press suggested on Twitter that Gabbert has struggled with short passes in practice, which is not a new phenomenon. But we wouldn't read too much into OTA performances just yet. The bigger news here is that Henne will be given a legitimate chance to earn the starting job.

UPDATE: AP reporter Mark Long tweeted Wednesday that what he saw was the "worst day of QB play I've witnessed at Jaguars practice in years." He went on to say that the offensive line wasn't much better.
