Well, I can’t write about dunderheads, like Tom Emmer, Michele Bachmann and Gregg Steinhafel all the time. The Supreme Court’s Voting Rights Blunder -- Koppleman - New York Magazine

Today's decision in Shelby v. Holder certainly ends the era which inspired me in my youth: the lunch counter sit-ins, ending the segregated southern school systems in the south, Misssippi Freedom summer to enforce voting rights.   Today the conservative majority on the Supreme Court claims the Voting Rights Act forces the southern states to prove they don't discriminate - when they think it is clear that bygones should be bygones.  We know that force isn't necessary to persuade them that a civil rights measure is unlawful - Seattle's voluntary school integration plan was stricken in another Roberts-led majority opinion.     I don't know what motivates John Roberts or the other conservatives on the court - aside from a gut resistance to any public action to eliminate the effects of our legacy of slavery, segregation, and racism. As usual Andrew Koppleman has a perspective close to mine.  - GWCThe Supreme Court's Voting Rights Blunderby Andrew Koppleman, Northwestern Law School   "Roberts writes: “There is no denying ... that the conditions that originally justified these measures no longer characterize voting in the covered jurisdictions.” There is a sense in which this is trivially true, the way it’s true that you can never step into the same river twice. The real question is whether racism is still powerful enough in these places to justify federal intervention. Congress thinks it is. But Roberts is sure that he knows better. The other notorious fact is a wave of voter I.D. laws that are being enacted across the United States. These laws are being justified with the rationale that they are necessary to prevent voter fraud. But that’s a transparent lie. The evidence of such fraud actually occurring is nil. The real reason for such laws is that they reduce the voting rates of blacks and Hispanics, and therefore advantage Republican candidates. Racially motivated voter suppression is still with us. How-To: 3D Print a Model of your Brain

Reddit user intirb recently posted a detailed tutorial on how to 3D print a model of your own brain using an MRI scan. If you haven’t had your head checked lately (I should hope you haven’t had to), intirb suggests inquiring in local university neuroscience departments to see if you can participate in a clinical trial in exchange for the MRI scans.Once you have the file of your grey and white matter cut into thin slices, you can import it into a program called FreeSurfer. It’s a highly specialized piece of software, and familiarity with Linux is recommended to use it, although there are plenty of online resources to help you out.FreeSurfer will generally take 1-2 days for an average desktop computer to process the MRI data and convert it into an STL file. The resulting file is so complex that it needs to be brought into MeshLab for simplification. Most programs that handle STL files cannot work with objects having more than 20,000 faces. Meshlab is used to reduce the file to below that threshold.Once this process was complete, intirb had success with dumping the STL straight into his MakerBot. Using this method, you can have a model of your own brain after just two to three hours of printing.

One of the series which will mix both history and fantasy in an unusual way is SLEEPY HOLLOW which will offer a new take on the famous legend over at Fox! The new show will air on Monday evenings as a supernatural mystery thriller coming from famous producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.SLEEPY HOLLOW STORY  ICHABOD CRANE'S TIME TRAVEL!A modern retelling of the classic 1820 short story THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW by Washington Irving, the show  brings up the question: What if you suddenly woke up from the throes of death 250 years in the future to find the world is on the brink of destruction, caused by unimaginable events, and you are humanity's last hope?  Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison, "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen") is resurrected and pulled two and a half centuries through time to unravel a mystery that dates all the way back to the founding fathers. Revived alongside Ichabod is the infamous Headless Horseman who is on a murderous rampage in present-day SLEEPY HOLLOW. Bound to the Headless Horseman by a blood spell cast on the battlefield of the American Revolution, Ichabod quickly realizes that stopping Headless is just the beginning, as the resurrected rider is but the first of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. As this re-invented Ichabod finds himself in present-day SLEEPY HOLLOW, he discovers a town and a world he no longer recognizes. All that is brutally familiar are Headless and Ichabod's determination to annihilate this immortal being. It's a mission he must complete quickly, as Headless already has viciously slain Sheriff August Corbin (guest star Clancy Brown). He served both as mentor and father figure to Detective Abbie Mills  (Nicole Beharie), a young cop whose own supernatural experiences help her form an unlikely bond with Ichabod. But SLEEPY HOLLOW's head of police, Captain Frank Irving (Orlando Jones), isn't buying any of this. In fact, the only person who is on Abbie's side is Ichabod. His extensive first-hand knowledge of secret American history, coupled with her superior profiling and modern threat assessment skills, will make them a formidable duo as they work together to triumph over evil. The complex pasts of Ichabod and Abbie, from Ichabod's inclusion in the powerful and secretive Freemasons Society and the ghostly appearance of his late wife, Katrina (Katia Winter), to Abbie's childhood visions, will help them solve the intricate puzzles of SLEEPY HOLLOW in order to protect its future.
